2023 Finals of the Bob Durig Memorial Mo-Kan
Game 4: (4-0-0); EKL (1-0-0)
31 March vs. BV Northwest (4-1)
It took the Saints 6-7 minutes to settle in, but then they started holding possession and fiercely attacking the Huskies goal—Karani was fun to watch as she turned so many good attempts away.
But after about twenty-five minutes, the match became pretty much a back and forth battle that had both goalkeepers active with their feet and their hands—just an entertaining evening of soccer. Check out this Payne save.
And the second half was pretty darn even.
The Saints did come away with a 4-1 win, and without Karani, we would have undoubtedly scored more, but Maggie Payne also made some key saves for the Saints and the Huskies built some nice attacks as well. And that second half was a physical back-and-forth.
Congrats to the team on a 4th straight Mo-Kan title (that's a big deal), and, of course, a shoutout to those Saint Thomas Aquinas girls named to the all tournament team: Maggie O'Keefe, Andi Rylance, Jane Hansen, Anisten Cabantac, and two-time Tara Peck Award Winner, Sydney Watts. The team, as a whole, just played great this week.
Tuesday will be a big challenge as a highly regarded St. James team will come to Saint Thomas Aquinas for PinkOut 2023. They have already knocked off the number one team in Missouri, St. Dominic's, and the number one team in Oklahoma, Jenks; so this should be quite a battle. Can they make it 3 states?
STATS:
First Half:
Saints: Shots: 11 (8), Corners: 1 (Marn)
34:27 Watts: direct kick from top of the box (goalie was in the box but her hands were out of the box—handball, with Watts making sure the side official saw it)
22:41 O'Keefe (just a great goal: it starts with Andi's awareness to run up to take the quick short free kick before defense is set with a quick pass to Brooklyn who hits a hard ground cross into the box by a Sandvig dummy to Maggie on the back side)
14:45 Watts (Sydney dispossesses the short roll out from Karani to the Northwest defender before sliding it in)
Huskies: Shots: 3 (3) Corners: 1
Second Half:
Saints: Shots: 10 (7) Corners: 1 (Marn)
36:32 Watts (Anisten slides it through to Syd who takes 3-4 quick dribbles before lefting it by Karani to the back post)
Huskies: Shots: 9 (7) Corners: 1
15:18 Gagnon (Nichols allowed an uncontested cross to the top of the box where Gagnon beats defender who has no secondary coverage, before slipping it by an on-coming Payne)
