Number One Jags Come to Saint Thomas Aquinas
Game 6: (6-0); EKL (3-0-0)
11 April vs. Blue Valley West (1-0)
We began a very tough week against the Metro Poll's number one team, Blue Valley West. The Jags came in, also 5-0, and 3-0-0 in the EKL.
Coach Brown has been very consistent with this starting line-up, but after tonight, we will be missing Watts for three straight matches. But we had her tonight. And that was enough for the fairly early game-winning goal in our 1-0 win.
We played a bit as if we just got back from Easter Break. But West probably had a bit to do with that, but overall we passed a lot of balls to the wrong team. So we were not particularly sharp, and not really in character.
And West threw the deep sweeper (as my brother calls a "cheat code in high school girls' soccer") at us, a tactic that we had trouble against although we did put a couple of great attacks back-to-back in the final five minutes. Sydney almost scored in the opening minute as well, but put the shot, hard, right at the keeper, despite being held.
Maggie Payne should probably be player of the match as she was superb in goal, even stopping a PK in the first half. West only put 3 shots on frame during the match, put took 8 corners against her—8! She caught a bunch of those in heavy traffic.
She did get some great help from Andi and her back 4. West was on our half a lot of the evening, but managed just the 3 shots on frame, and none were particularly dangerous. We blocked a bunch, dispossessed them quite a bit, and picked off a fair amount of passes.
Thursday we travel to 7-0-0 Blue Valley Southwest. Friday, we are back home against Ursuline. So much more to go this week.
STATS:
First Half:
Saints: Shots: 8 (5) Corners: 0
23:55 Watts (Rylance threads the through ball, timing Sydney's nice diagonal run)
Jags: Shots: 1 (1) Corners: 5
Second Half
Saints: Shots: 6 (4) Corners: 0
Jags: Shots: 8 (2) Corners: 3
Saints had one of their girls' soccer greats back for the game tonight: Ali Schlegel. I still remember her goal against Duchesne, out of Nebraska, when we traveled up there to end their 62-game winning streak in the early 90's. That match helped put the program on the National map.
