Ursuline Travels up from St. Louis
Game 8: (7-0-1); EKL (3-0-1)
14 April vs. Ursuline Academy (3-2, 1OT)
We reached the halfway point tonight with our match against one of St. Louis' best, Ursuline Academy. They came in around .500, but on a nice two-game winning streak including a win over state-champion favorite, St. Dominic's. And they came in with 2 days of rest.
That rest did not look as if it mattered early on as we came out dominant, leading 2-0 after only 4 minutes. We kept that up for about 15 minutes and then seemed to hit a wall—and my did things shift.
Ursuline took over for the rest of the half, but they only knocked one in, so we lead 2-1 at half. And throughout most of the match, Coach got a lot of players their first varsity minutes at Saint Thomas Aquinas. Those girls (Flynn, DiCarlo, Minnis, Eischen) allowed quite a few starters to get some needed bench time.
Hesser, Whorley, Demand, Macrorie, and Kammerer also logged minutes during the match to allow some of those 100-minute players from last night some rest.
Scherzer, Spinello, and Cabantac, I believe, went Iron Women, playing the entire match and the overtime, doing the same last night.
Ursuline got it tied early in the second half. Then, eighty-one minutes after she scored our second goal, Brooklyn hit a bomb from 30 to win it in the first overtime. She saved all of us 15 minutes and our undefeated record.
The girls will now get a nice week break until they travel to Wichita next Friday to take on Kapaun. They certainly earned it going 2-0-1 this week against a powerhouse lineup of BV West, BV Southwest and Ursuline Academy.
I received a text last night noting what a marvelous match Coach Jones thought Alexis Scherzer had played against his BVSW squad in that double overtime match. It is just great to hear good things about Saint Thomas Aquinas players from opposing coaches.
