Region 4 Championship
Game 18: 15-2-1
18 May 2023 vs. Topeka Seaman at Seaman (4-1)
29th Regional Girls' Soccer Title, 21st in a Row!
The match was still 2-1 with less than 3 minutes to go. And the Vikings were generating chances in that second half. We, also, were not finishing all of our opportunities and the Vikings had some stand out players such as #10, Jaycee Schumann and #7 Ava Huston. Their junior keeper was pretty formidable as well.
The Vikings earned 5 corners for the night, but Zinkus won so many headers defending them, that they really did not have good opportunities off them.
Anisten Cabantac put on quite a show tonight. She had all of our assists tonight, and honestly, she could have had a couple of more with a bit more consistent finishing. Her defense was stellar as well.
With Scherzer still MRI-less, we had moved Andi back to centerback and Brooklyn back to the midfield and inserted Cara into the starting lineup up top. All that seemed to work fairly well. We, however, did only lead 1-0 at half, and 2-1 late as I mentioned. So hats off to that slightly revamped defense.
Speaking of hats, Sydney did doff one, her final goal coming off the Viking kickoff.
Freshman, Kennedy Miller, got some quality minutes at forward in both halves, and she stood out. She has so much pace with the ball that she is dangerous. She just missed a first half assist and a second-half goal.
Just when we thought we had played our last home game on Tuesday, number one seed, Piper, fell, in PK's, to Spring Hill. Their loss moves St. James to the one-line to now play Spring Hill, and us to the two line to take on Southwest. Things did not get any easier for us, but we do get to play at Saint Thomas Aquinas one more time.
STATS:
First Half:

Second Half:
Saints: Shots: 14 (8) Corners: 1 (Marn)
31:32 Watts (Anisten plays it early, long, over the top to Syd)
2:40 O'Keefe (Cabantac (watch the reception from Zinkus) attacks the baseline , drives toward the 6-box and slots a perfect T-ball)
2:27 Watts (How not to run a kickoff: backward; short, forward; backward as Syd intercepts and goes)
Vikings: Shots: 7 (5) Corners: 2
22:35 Schumann (Schumann takes the ball rotation to the right into a nice low shot that Payne saves, but somehow she wins the rebound in the middle of the 18-box for the follow)
