Senior Night 2023
Game 14: (11-2-1); EKL (4-1-1)
4 May vs. DeSoto (4-1)
Tonight we honor our 6 seniors: Lindsey Whorley, Sydney Watts, Brandy Herhusky, Mia Sandvig, Bria Demand, and Alexis Scherzer. And as is tradition, they will occupy 6 of the 11 spots in the starting line-up.
DeSoto came in 7-6, having just lost 1-0 in OT to the number two seed in 5A, Topeka Seaman. They also only lost to Southwest, 2-0. So we were anticipating a team similar to the Miege team that came in on Tuesday.
We came out of the gates fast, quickly jumping to a 4-0 lead at the 20 minute mark, scoring on two of our 8 first-half corners. Senior Lindsey Whorley got the first goal on senior night, and the only goal by a senior during senior night!
DeSoto did not cross midfield for much of the first half, but they did score a goal towards the end of the half on their own corner kick.
And. that was it—we played the second half, but it went scoreless.
The roster got lots of minutes. Freshman, Maisy Wilson, made her varsity debut tonight, playing the back—clean sheet.
We also received good news on Zinkus—just a bruise!
Regular season will be over Monday evening. That just seems crazy. We will have a rematch of the State Championship match Saturday at Mill Valley—that should be a great match as they have lost only once.
And then Monday night we will play at Blue Valley for the EKL title as Blue Valley and Saint James have both lost 2 EKL matches. So win, and we win.
Despite Miege 2-0 victory over Piper to bring them their second loss, we appear destined for the 5 seed in postseason, even if we win out—as St. James, Piper, Topeka-Seaman, and Sumner Academy all appear headed to a 14-2 record, a half-game ahead of where we would be if we win out.
Senior Night Celebration in the Commons after the win over DeSoto!
