This game can be summed up in 3 words: Strength of Schedule. The girls came out in a yeoman-like manner to disperse the undefeated Maize South, 19-0-Maize South, 4-0. Keep in mind that Maize South had scored 110 goals coming into this match. Think about that as we had scored only 58, but won 4-0. Strength of schedule.

Sydney got hers, but this was a match that showcased the fact that we have 3 dynamite forwards: 2) Brooklyn Marn—she cashed big, big goals tonight—and 3) Maggie O'Keefe who continues to create and to score. 


Also, you had a Maize South team with an excellent keeper and centerback, and with one of the major scorers in the state—Arkansas-bound Ewerts, but fortunately, she had not gone up against the likes of Jane Hansen this season before now. 



The Saints, using an almost identical rotation to the one used against BVSW on Tuesday, stymied the Mavericks all over the field, getting an identical final score as well. 

The Saints reached another gear during the final week of regular season as they easily handled excellent Mill Valley and Blue Valley squads, and they have stayed in that gear throughout postseason, despite losing our very talented centerback, Alexis Scherzer. This has been an impressive run. 

Maggie Payne actually exited this match early, something that doesn't happen much, once all year before tonight. But Ruder and her benchmates shutout undefeated Maize South for the final twelve minutes.


St. James fell (0-0 in regulation) in a sudden death shootout, on the 7th kicker, to Bishop Carroll, whom the Saints will play tomorrow at 2:00 PM for the 2023 5A State Title.

34:24 O'Keefe (Hansen finds Holton on the check-down for her to turn to slot it to Watts, who bangs it off the keeper for the Maggie follow)

28:40 Marn (Zinkus wins the punt and pushes it to O'Keefe who drives down the line before lifting the long diagonal cross that gets mis-clear off the bar for a Brooklyn follow)

14:21 Watts (O'Keefe checks down, turns, and finds Syd on a quick diagonal run)

The Saints won their third straight and 18 th  overall Saturday, downing Bishop Carroll 2-0 at the Class 5A State Championship in Topeka.    Prior to Saturday, Bishop Carroll had permitted just one goal to an opponent from within the borders of the state of Kansas all season. Aquinas equaled that total in a flash. Post Season Begins!

16 May 2023 vs. Shawnee Heights (4-0) Game 17: 14-2-1 2023 STATS The Saints finished the regular season strong, winning the EKL, with a 13-2-1 record, and beating some big time teams to end it. All of that gave us just this one home game tonight as the 5-seed in the Northeast—now that's a bit odd, but it all started with our first dose of Topeka. 6-9-1 Heights kept the score reasonable as we only lead 1-0 at half, winning 4-0. We did hold possession most of the time, and only rarely did the Thunderbirds cross midfield—but they played hard for the entire game, and their keeper was active, saving quite a few shots.  The Thuderbirds created a few stats in the second half—a shot on goal and a couple of corners For us, the only worry is Alexis, as she landed funny fairly early in the second half. I am sure only an MRI will tells us for sure if her knee made it through the fall in tack (a late-night report suggested she was going to be ok). Let's hope so. She has been so good all sea...
